This design uses a realtime clock chip and the PIC chips reads the time from it every second over I2C, this has the advantage of being able to use a backup batery to keep the time even when the power is disconnected, although I am not using this feature in this circuit.

This is the rear-view of the clock.

The small perf-board mounted at the upper left of the meter is the clock electronics. The clock program in it’s current prototype form is assembler instructions in about twice as many lines of source code. There is one control for the clock, the set button.

Pressing this button advances the time by 1 hour. If you loop past midnight, the minutes is reset to 0.

This means that the clock can only be set accurately at the top of the hour. There is only one output used to run the clock, and that is a CPU port pin that is pulse-width modulated at about 16 KHz. The duty cycle of the pulse controls the meter deflection. Some purists may imply that I am actually using 3 more bits for output, and ;ic is technically correct.

The LEDs provided me some debugging outputs, however, they are not needed any longer. It is interesting to watch the 5 Hz LED blink. Because the meter is center-zero, I had to create an offset voltage. The white pot does that. The black pot is the deflection. It’s pi simple to calibrate.
