Entjusiasm you like to tell shulkan about a lower price? Ashleigh’s current fancy is also Julie’s own passion, Pride and Prejudiceand the heroine’s quest for True Love. And so Julie finds herself swept along with Ashleigh, dressed in vintage frocks and sneaking into a dance at the local all-boys’ prep school. There they discover several likely candidates for True Love, including the handsome and sensitive Parr.

And Ebthusiasm begins to wonder if maybe this obsession of Ashleigh’s isn’t so bad after all. Read more Read less. Audible book Switch back and forth between reading the Shulkan book and ennthusiasm to the Audible book with Whispersync for Voice.

The Last Best Kiss. Ashleighs latest craze involves crashing the fall dance at the local boys prep school in search of men and, perhaps, her Mr. Julia, whos not sure about this idea, reluctantly goes with her. There they are befriended by two boys, one of whom happens to be the Mysterious Stranger Julia had previously spotted in the mall.

The four teens establish a friendship, and, for the first time, Julia feels the crush enthjsiasm friendship guilt: This frustration is exacerbated when the girls receive parts in the boys school play and the four see one another almost every day. Julia begins to receive small gifts and love notes, but cannot allow enthusixsm to believe they could be from the boy she wishes had sent them.

Add to that another suitor for Julia and she is completely confused about love in the 10th grade. She has a cool head on her shoulders, however, and pulls through without melodrama and experiences her satisfying first and second kiss.

A charming romantic comedy. I speak from bitter experience. Since elementary school, Ashleigh has taken up one craze after another, from military strategy to ballet, from Harriet the Spy to King Arthur, and dragged her best friend along for companionship.

But when Ashleigh begins sophomore year speaking Jane Austen’s prose and crashing an exclusive prep school’s cotillion to dance the Founder’s Quadrille, she commits a double fault: Shulman captures the agony and the irony of Julie’s struggles to pplly her own polpy as she navigates the conventions of a culture that, for all its twenty-first-century trappings, still leaves young women hoping that the young men of their dreams will recognize and return their unspoken affections.

While familiarity with Austen’s world through her books or, more likely, the movie renditions will deepen readers’ appreciation for Shulman’s impressive first novel, it is by no means a prerequisite to enjoying this involving and pokly amusing narrative of friendship, courtship, and of course true love. Julie is 15 and about to start her Sophomore year of high school.

It is her friend Ashleigh who is the Enthusiast. When Ashleigh finds her new “thing,” she enters it heart and soul. This has included things from candy making, reptiles, favorite rock bands, the Little House books, and now Pride and Prejudice. Now Julie’s friend will only wear long skirts and speaks in the archaic language of Georgian England. She has even devised a plan for the two of them to ejthusiasm the fall dance at the local all boys private school to find their Darcys.

In the process, they do meet two nice boys – one of which is Julie’s Mysterious Stranger who she had seen around town all summer. By the end of the night, Julie is swept away by him, and the next morning she finds out that her friend, Ashleigh, has found her Darcy. So, now Julie is bound to keep her mouth closed as loyalty to Ashleigh. As the story progresses, the girls are thrown into the path of the boys even more as they become involved in a play, which the two young men wrote the songs and lyrics for, at the all boys school.

Julie plays it cool with Parr because of her predicament even when to the reader it is apparent that Parr is definitely into her not Ashleigh. This is a book of comedy as well as romance and of course includes teen issues of family, friendship, and first loves.

It was very well written and interesting especially finding all the Jane Austen and other literary references. The author has depicted teen age shulmxn extremely well. And her poetry is terrific. Parr is a poet. And I found myself really starting to feel everything that the heroine of the story was going through.

As Parr would walk into the coffee shop she was patronizing, my heartbeat sped up just like the Julie’s. It is a clean, sweet story that I would recommend for pre-teen girls and up. One person found this helpful. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.

I first read this book when I was 16 or 17 years old, and I’m writing this review now as an almost 23 year old. I loved Enthusiasm then for its genuine characters, friendships, innocent romances, awkward relationships, and the pokly use of Jane Austen.

I read it first after checking it out at my local library and, even after returning it, remembered ejthusiasm as one of my favorites. A couple of years went by and I couldn’t polyl the name of the book, so from time to time I’d think of it and do random searches to try to figure out the title or author.

At last, one day last year, it came to me: So I bought the e-book and have since read it multiple times. It’s simple, it’s sweet, it’s loyalty, it’s every girl pining after her crush and not knowing what to do about it. Even as an adult, I recommend it to my fellow avid readers.

I am prejudiced in favor of this author since I attended high school with her and we worked together on the alternate literary magazine she founded. I was pleased to read the same creative, believable and insightful voice I remembered from that time — despite her youth. I despaired of matching her creative writing skills and it is wonderful shulmaan read a full-length published novel with her talent.

ENTHUSIASM by Polly Shulman | Kirkus Reviews

I was thrilled to read echoes of our high school experience, tweaked to appeal to modern teenagers. I loved the happy ending despite the believable throes of adolescent angst. Finally, I gave it to my own teenaged daughter and she enjoyed pollu as well.

From Me to You Shilman way it’s written. To be 16 again I think I just might like it if I had Julie’s life. Book Reviews — read more of my review on my blog: What a delightful read!

The enthuiasm are thoroughly likable and their adventures engaging, making it a very fast read. There’s lots of fun along the way. Some of the plot was predictable, but it didn’t detract from the adventure.

I hope the author will write many more books, including more about these characters. I think it helps to have read Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” first, or at least to have seen one of the movie versions but read the book, too! We can all be enthusiasts! Be passionate about your dreams and delights! As an adult, people find it strange I read YA, but Polly Shulman is a wonderful author and this boom another great read. I will consider reading all her books on just her name alone. This has always been one of my favorite books.

It’s entertaining and, while not quite what one would normally encounter in real life, at least more believable enthussiasm those romance novels where the two protagonists meet and fall in love in a matter of days.

Polly Shulman has stretched this out over a more realistic several months and fills the space between with amusing anecdotes and the compelling voice of Julie Lefkowitz. For enthusasm years now, I checked this out whenever I found it in the library, and I recently decided to add it to my personal library.

It was a very wise decision and I do not regret it.
